SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Two people have been charged with attempted murder after firing shots at Spartanburg County Deputies, the sheriff’s office said on Sunday.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, deputies from the Uniform Patrol Division were in the parking lot of 150 Accurate Way in Inman Sunday morning around 4:15 a.m. when they heard several gunshots coming from the direction of Interstate 26 East.

The release states that the deputies moved from their positions and heard more gunshots as they notified dispatch that someone was shooting at them.

One deputy who responded to the scene observed a green Camaro driving at high speeds away from the location of the incident, and pulled the vehicle over.

Akymzee Holbert and Tarus Mallory, of Spartanburg, were subsequently arrested. Both have been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Mallory was also cited for driving with a suspended license.

Both Holbert and Mallory were denied bond Sunday night.

“These two guys decided that they would just drive down the road and they saw two patrol cars and they thought they’d just take shots at them,” Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said.

“Normally, I’m jovial and I’m smiling, but I’m not this morning,” Sheriff Wright said. “I am aggravated. I am downright angry that somebody tried to kill two of my family members.”

That was Sheriff Chuck Wright’s reaction after learning someone fired shots at two of his deputies while they were working.

“It was only by God’s grace that nobody got hurt,” he said.

Sheriff Wright said the two deputies were parked next to each other when they heard at least ten gunshots coming from the direction of I-26 East.

“You better not be messing with us, because we’re not taking that crap from you,” Sheriff Wright said. “We’re not taking it anymore. I’m tired of you targeting law enforcement.”

A responding deputy noticed a green Camaro driving quickly from the scene. They pulled over that driver and said they found a gun in the car’s glove box and shell casings nearby.

“You are not going to drive around Spartanburg County and do that without some serious retribution,” Sheriff Wright said. “You shoot at law enforcement around here, we’re going to do what it takes to get you. If you give up and it’s peaceful, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s your choice.”

Sheriff Wright said he commends his deputies for the way they responded and said he’s grateful the outcome of this incident wasn’t much worse. He said he’s keeping the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and friends and family of Deputy Ryan Hendrix in his thoughts and prayers.
