Undecided voters give live reaction to Tillis-Cunningham debate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (NEXSTAR) โ€“ FOX 46 brought a group of undecided voters to watch the NC Senate Debate between Republican incumbent Thom Tillis and Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham Tuesday night.

The candidates covered a wide range of topics that are important to North Carolinians and throughout the one-hour debate, we polled undecided voters and tracked their live reaction to what was said by Senator Thom Tillis (R) and challenger Cal Cunningham (D).

FOX 46 Charlotte worked together with an outside research company to put together the panel of undecided voters. Each registered undecided voter was thoroughly screened before participating.

The stream gave users a play-by-play breakdown of the biggest moments that garnered positive and negative reaction from our panel of voters.

Here’s what our group of undecided voters had to say about the flip-flopping on the nomination of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s replacement:

โ€œI feel like the president does have a right to a Justice at this point, and I feel the other side is just, you know, out of line,โ€ one voter said.

โ€œI think the incoming president should select that and they should not be forcing the vote at this point,โ€ another told FOX 46.

When it comes to universal healthcare, again, two voters were split on the topic.

โ€œI’m nervous that government-run healthcare would not be as successful as what we have today,โ€ one said.

โ€œIf we had universal healthcare, hey, we wouldn’t have to worry about pre-existing conditions,โ€ said another.

One part of the debate the undecided voters sided with one another? Indecisiveness on whether or not Senator Thom Tillis was for or against a national mask mandate.

โ€œI very much doubt him because I can’t trust [you] if you can’t answer a question straight up.โ€

โ€œThom didn’t really give a good answer for it. He kind of implied that he wasn’t really against it.โ€

โ€œFor those of us who haven’t quite made a decision, that didn’t really help me other than just to know he doesn’t have a position.โ€

So the big question: Did the debate help sway any of the undecided?

โ€œI thought it was extremely pejorative and they were nitpicking with each other and it’s the same information that we hear on their ads every single day,โ€ one voter said.

โ€œI think Cunningham took more of a stance on issues and he hit Tillis where Tillis is weak and that’s his hypocrisy between 2016 and now.โ€

Whether or not they were deeply influenced by the debate, the voters say they at the very least have a better idea of which name their checking on their ballots this year.

โ€œI thought it was more antagonistic as well, but Cunningham did a better job for me.โ€

โ€œI don’t know if I necessarily got swayed, but I think I know what Iโ€™m going to do,” another voter told FOX 46.

Election Day is November 3. The early voting period in North Carolina runs Thursday, October 15 to Saturday, October 31. Dates and hours during the early voting period may vary based on where you live.
