Truck driven off bridge into Lake Hartwell likely intentional, Georgia State Patrol says

STEPHENS CO., GA (WSPA) – A crash that killed a man after his truck went off of a bridge into Lake Hartwell was likely intentional, investigators say.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened in the broken bridges area near Stephens County Park Road shortly before 11:30pm on December 31.

The trooper investigation determined that the pickup truck was likely driven off of the bridge intentionally.

Georgia State Patrol, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, Stephens County Fire and Rescue, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources all responded to the scene.

The driver, later identified as 49-year-old William Norton of Royston, GA, was found dead in the river after a short search.

The pickup truck was located in the water around 3:30pm on January 1.
