Trustee: McMaster to force vote on new university president

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A University of South Carolina trustee says Gov. Henry McMaster is trying to get the board to call a special meeting and vote on a president while students are away.

Trustee Charles Williams said Tuesday that McMaster wants a Friday vote to hire retired Army three star general and West Point Superintendent Robert Caslen to be the University of South Carolina’s new president.

Caslen was one of four finalists in April, but trustees postponed a vote after students protested his lack of qualifications and a comment that binge drinking was a big factor in sexual assaults.

No time for a special meeting has been announced and McMaster’s office has not commented.

Williams’ comments were first reported by The State newspaper.
