An Upstate fire department is under new leadership after a board removed the current fire chief. The Kelly Kelton Fire Department Board met in executive session for more than three and a half hours Monday night. And, at the end, they voted 4 to 1 to removed Chief Bryan Farr from his position but to keep him on the roster.Farr was placed on administrative leave two weeks ago as the board conducted its internal investigation. The investigation stemmed from a call on Super Bowl Sunday. Initially, firefighters on scene said when Farr arrived he seemed drunk. He admitted to having a few drinks several hours before the call. However, the board’s decision to remove him had nothing to do with that allegation. They said they removed Farr because he challenged command authority on scene which is a direct violation of a county agreement.  The board said they based their decision on six written statements from witnesses on scene. One of the letters came from the Union County Fire Chief Association. In that letter, it stated that Farr would not be welcome at any other fire scene in the county other than ones in Kelly Kelton’s district as long as he was chief.7 News asked a representative if that letter still stood if Farr remained on the roster but not chief, and the representative said yes.    The chief who claimed Farr challenged his authority was present at the meeting Monday night. He said things got heated, but ultimately, Farr did obey one of his commands but that he didn’t know what happened after that moment.“Where everything went wrong, I don’t know,” Bryan Farr said. “He hasn’t sat down like he should have. I reached out to him. But, I think a lot of things could have been resolved if people sit down like a man or gentleman and reserve things out, but that didn’t happen.” Many of the Kelly Kelton Firefighters at the meeting said they will be quitting now that Farr is out as chief. They said it is a hard decision to make, but the department has had multiple chiefs within a year time frame. They said Farr was the only chief to give them certified training and make improvements at the department. The board is putting a past Kelly Kelton chief back in the position as interim
