GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – An Upstate man received the Congressional Gold Medal Sunday morning in Greenville.
Former Marine Leroy Richardson Sr. served his country during World War II.
He is what is known as a Montford Point Marine.
The Montford Point Marines were the first African-Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an executive order in 1941.
US Congressman William Timmons along with members of the Montford Point Marine Association presented Richardson with the award.
Several years ago, Congress decided to recognize the original Montford Point Marnes with the Congressional Gold Medal for their service.
The ceremony was held at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
