VIDEO: Inmate gets 11 years for attack at Greenville Co. Detention Center

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) - A man was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault and battery.

According to a solicitor's office news release, Bobby Joe Reid, Jr., 49, pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and was sentenced.

On Jan. 2, 2017, Reid assaulted a victim by punching and stomping on him repeatedly while being housed at the Greenville County Detention Center.

The victim "sustained great bodily injury" following the assault.

The incident between Reid and the victim was captured on surveillance video.

According to John Vandermosten, Reid was being held in jail for habitual offender, domestic violence-2nd degree, disregarding stop sign, driving under suspended-3rd and above/non DUI, and reckless driving.

We asked Vandermosten if any measures were taken following the assault and he said:

"Whenever an inmate assaults another inmate, or two inmates get into a fight, they are sent to a lock down unit called the Special Housing Unit (SHU). This is the most restrictive and secure housing unit in the Detention Center. They are housed alone in a single cell until a hearing is held to determine the facts of the incident. At the conclusion of our investigation, investigators with the Detention Center obtained criminal warrants and charged Inmate Reid with Attempted Murder and Obstruction of Justice. Inmate Reid was then held in the SHU for 92 days after the assault."

When asked if assault like this one are common at the Greenville County Detention Center, Vandermosten said minor fights happen on a weekly basis, and said another inmate assaulting another inmate does happen but is less common.

"Assaults similar to this particular incident are extremely rare," he said. "We haven't witnessed one this severe with this extent of injuries in a long time."

An investigation is still ongoing by the Greenville County Detention Center.
