Wildfire holding steady, evacuation orders lifted for Chimney Rock, Lake Lure

LAKE LURE, N.C (WSPA) – Firefighters on the front lines of the Rutherford County wildfire say no additional acres have been burned since Friday and the fire is now 45 percent contained.

Crews were concerned the fire, which scorched about 7200 acres, would continue to spread because of high winds that swept through the region over the weekend. That never happened, officials said.

Mandatory evacuation orders for Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, which were issued after the first flames were spotted ten days ago, were lifted on Saturday. Businesses were reopening as of mid-afternoon Monday.

November is usually the peak tourist season for this area as visitors come to see the changing fall leaves. Business owners estimate they lost thousands of dollars in revenue because of the evacuation.
