MCDOWELL Co., N.C. (WSPA) — Deputies say a father has been charged in connection to the accidental shooting of a teen.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Merle Dwayne Foster, 48, of Nebo with failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.

Deputies say a 16-year-old was shot while spending the night with Foster’s teen son last month.

Foster’s son was cleaning a handgun when it accidentally fired and hit the teen in the leg, deputies say.

The injured teen was treated at the hospital.
