UNION COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – Union County Sheriff’s Office officials arrested a woman on charges related to embezzlement following an investigation into missing funds at an area water company.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, a representative with Meansville-Riley Road Water Company filed a report about the missing funds, which may go back as far as the last several years, on Feb. 27.

Union County investigators and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the case.

Investigators arrested Sara Whitmire Gilliam, 74, of Buffalo, SC, after reviewing video evidence, as well as interviewing employees.

Gilliam was arrested and charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, valued at greater than $10,000 or more.

Union County Sheriff David Taylor said no more arrests are expected in this case.

Gilliam was arrested, booked and later released on bond.
