Woman hit by vehicle in downtown Greenville dies, driver charged with DUI

A woman passed away an area hosptial in Greenville after being hit by a DUI driver Friday night. 

Virginia Byrne, 79, of Greenville, passed away at Prisma Heath Sunday at about 10:30 a.m., according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. 

Byne was crossing South Main Street near East McBee Avenue at about 8:15 p.m. when she was struck by a Ford F-150. 

Byne was taken from the accident to the Greenville Trauma Center where she passed away. 

The coroner’s office said the cause of death is pending further investigation. 

David Robert Lee, 37, was driving the truck and was charged with driving under the influence, and the investigation continues.

“Our traffic reconstruction officers are currently still conducting their investigation to try to put the missing pieces together to find out what happened Friday night. They are trying to pull footage from city and business owned cameras to answer the question of how this all unfolded,” said Donnie Porter with Greenville Police.

Porter says Lee may be charged with more depending on the investigation.

Clemson University confirmed that Lee does work in their public relations and marketing department in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.
