An authentic WWII bomber plane is on display at the Greenville Downtown Airport this weekend and is available for grounded afternoon tours and morning flights.
The fully restored B-17G plane “Aluminum Overcast” has been restored by The Experimental Aircraft Association and is one of only 3 or 4 in the country that is still flying regularly.
Made in 1945, it still runs off its restored, original engine and hydraulic system. “It’s 1930s technology,” Ewing says. “It’s like flying a cement truck without power steering.”
The plane is available for grounded tours Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon for $10 a person. WWII veterans and children will receive free admission. Plane rides in the mornings are also available for purchase. Guests will spend an hour in the sky, and can tour the plane once it is airborne.
