Which Mario costumes are best?
The Mario series and all its characters are among the most recognizable video game icons in history. Even people who don’t play games can recognize him on the spot. Games involving Mario are routinely among the highest-grossing games every year, not to mention regularly being among the most critically beloved.
It’s no surprise then that there are so many costumes of Mario, his friends and his enemies available. They’re perfect for any kind of Halloween event and are especially strong candidates for group costumes.

Characters
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of recognizable and named characters made into costumes across all mainline and spinoff Mario games. That said, most of the popular ones are:
- Mario: The man himself made his debut as Jumpman in the Donkey Kong arcade cabinet released in Japan in 1981. He was later named Mario during the U.S. localization process, and the rest is history.
- Luigi: Mario’s younger fraternal twin brother made his debut in the Mario Bros. Game & Watch in 1983. He’s often depicted as cowardly but never fails to rise to a heroic occasion when called upon, making him a favorite of many.
- Wario: Wario is the dark mirror of Mario and is often an antagonistic character in Mario games when he isn’t heading up his own games as an anti-hero. He debuted in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992.
- Waluigi: Waluigi, like Wario to Mario, is Luigi’s dark mirror. Unlike Wario, Waluigi is almost exclusively found in spinoff games and especially party games such as Mario Party. He debuted in Mario Tennis in 2000.
- Princess Peach: The ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom from whence most Mario characters come, Peach has come a long way from the damsel in distress role she took on in her debut in 1985’s Super Mario Bros. She’s even been the lead in her own game or two.
- Princess Daisy: This princess is the ruler of a different kingdom called Sarasaland. She made her debut in 1989’s Super Mario Land and has since been a playable staple in most Mario spinoff games.
- Princess Rosalina: The final main princess in Mario games is also one of the most recent editions to the series, debuting in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy. She protects the entire cosmos and, unlike Peach and Daisy, has never been a damsel in distress.
- Toad: Toad is both the longtime attendant to Princess Peach and the general name for the main populace of the Mushroom Kingdom. There are several different named Toads including the female Toadette and Captain Toad.
- Donkey Kong: The great ape Donkey Kong has been both an antagonist and a friend to Mario since his debut alongside him in the Donkey Kong arcade game of the early ’80s. When Donkey Kong got his first starring role in 1994’s Donkey Kong Country, the arcade game’s Kong was retconned to be Crazy Kong.
- Yoshi: Yoshi made his debut in 1990’s Super Mario World as an ally to Mario but has since become the protagonist of many Yoshi games.
- Bowser: The Mario series’ main antagonist, Bowser made his debut in Super Mario Bros. alongside Princess Peach, whom he kidnapped. At rare times he has worked alongside Mario to defeat a common enemy, but he has never been a friend to him.
