Australia beats US in Fed Cup first round in Asheville

ASHEVILLE, NC (WSPA) – The United States team dropped two of their final three matches to lose to Australia in the first round of the Fed Cup in Asheville.

In the first match on Sunday, Australian Ashleigh Barty defeated American Madison Keys 6-4, 6-1 to put Australia up two matches to one.

Next, Danielle Collins was able to even the score by defeating Aussie Daria Gavrilova, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

In the final match of the round, the Australian doubles team of Ashleigh Barty and Priscilla Hon defeated Americans Collins and Nicole Melichar, 6-4,7-5.

Australia moves on to face Belarus in the next round while the US team will have to face one of Switzerland, Spain, Canada, or Latvia to make it back to the World Group next year.

4,987 were in attendance for the matches at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.

This is the second consecutive year that Asheville has hosted a first-round Fed Cup matchup.
