Clemson Lands Top Prospect In Alabama, Beats Tide

College Sports

The most intriguing question to be answered Wednesday for Clemson or South Carolina was the direction five-star wide receiver Justyn Ross of Phenix City, AL would take on a much different National Signing Day than years past.

He announced early in the afternoon that he’s headed to Clemson, picking the Tigers over in-state schools Alabama and Auburn.

Ross becomes the first top-rated player in that state to not choose the Crimson Tide since quarterback Jameis Winston opted for Florida State.

Ross’ choice gives the Tigers the number one prospect in six different states in this year’s class, the bulk of whom signed during the December early period.

USC signed four-star OL Dylan Wonnum of Tucker, GA (his brother, D.J., is a defensive lineman on the Gamecocks) while they awaited official word from wide receiver/defensive back Bryce Thompson of Dutch Fork High School near Columbia. It appeared he would not sign Wednesday.  He committed to USC in December.South Carolina was in on Georgia DL John Mincey but he opted for Tennessee.

What was typically a day of frenzy in years past, the first Wednesday in February, has a significantly different feel to it this year.

The long-desired-by-coaches earlier signing day in December led to most major prospects putting their names on the dotted lines and, thus, taking the suspense out of today’s proceedings.

Several area players confirmed their college plans Wednesday including Greenwood wide receiver Sam Pinckney, who holds several school records, and he’ll sign with Georgia State.

Christ Church kicker Cliff Gandis is also bound for Atlanta as he’ll sign with Georgia Tech.

Several others will sign with other FBS, FCS, and Division II schools and we’ll have coverage throughout the day on 7 News and at
