High School Football

Abbeville built a 14-0 first quarter lead and never looked back in defeating Barnwell, 48-14, Friday night at Columbia’s Benedict College for the 2A state championship.

It’s the fourth straight state crown for the Panthers, who won their sixth title this decade, extended their winning streak to 22 straight, and have won 54 of their past 58.  They end the campaign at 14-0.

Hanna trailed Dutch Fork by 11 to start the fourth quarter at Williams-Brice stadium in the 5A title game and had the ball at the Silver Foxes’ seven-yard-line.  A fumble led to Tyrik McDaniel’s 93-yard touchdown return, setting the stage for Dutch Fork’s 59-20 victory, their third straight crown. The Yellow Jackets gave-up- another scoop and score touchdown in a turnover-laden final period in closing the season at 14-1.

Hanna is 25-2 in Jeff Herron’s two seasons at the helm.

In 4A, Greer saw a 14-10 halftime lead go away as Myrtle Beach came up with three second half interceptions in a 37-21 victory, ending Greer’s season at 13-2.
