Greenville is getting a team in the United Soccer League Division III, a newly-created level that also has franchises targeted for Statesboro, GA and Tuscon, AZ.
Local businessman Joe Erwin will own the team, that has yet to be named nor has a site been determined where they’ll play. They hope to build or renovate an existing site for a permanent home.
The team begins play in March of 2019.
Our area has had pro soccer twice before.
In the 1990s, the South Carolina Shamrocks called Greer home before folding.
Near the turn of the century, the Greenville Lions had a brief existence playing in Sirrine Stadium.
