USC: Game Will Be Played In Columbia

USC released this statement Wednesday evening relative to Saturday night’s game against Georgia:

The University of South Carolina and its athletics department are continuing to monitor the movements of Hurricane Matthew as it relates to the scheduled football game with the University of Georgia.  We are in communication with the National Weather Service, state and local authorities and the SEC regarding potential weather issues.

We anticipate a decision about the game to be made on Thursday. The safety of everyone affected by the storm and the minimization of the impact on emergency personnel are the most important factors in making the decision.

The USC vs. UGA game will be played in Columbia. Currently, kickoff is still slated for 7:30 pm Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Earlier in the day, USC Associate Athletic Director Charles Bloom told Columbia’s 107.5 The Game Wednesday afternoon that they continue to monitor the situation regarding Hurricane Matthew relative to Saturday night’s game against Georgia but that the chance of moving the game from Williams-Brice Stadium is ‘minimal.’

Bloom added that playing the game on Sunday or Monday is also an option. South Carolina has an open date the following weekend.  Georgia plays home to Vanderbilt at noon on October 15th.

Governor Nikki Haley said Wednesday evening that state police would not be available to serve in a security role for Saturday night’s game due to attention to the storm.

South Carolina had a home game against LSU moved to Baton Rouge last year following historic flooding in the Columbia area.

There is added flexibility in potentially moving the game off of Saturday as USC has an open date the following weekend.
