SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford right-hander Jake Hershman and VMI outfielder Matt Pita and have been named the Southern Conference pitcher and player of the week, respectively, for all games April 9-15. The selections are made by the league office.
Hershman was a key figure in two victories for the Terriers last week. The Dacula, Georgia, native tossed four-scoreless innings against Presbyterian on Wednesday, striking out two batters and picking up the win as Wofford edged out Presbyterian 3-2. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Furman, the sophomore went 4 2/3 innings, striking out six batters as the Terriers claimed the weekend series with a 5-2 win over the Paladins. Batters are hitting just .165 for the season against Hershman, as the right-hander sports a 3.51 earned run average.
The weekly award is the first of his career. He is the second Wofford pitcher to be honored this season, joining Adam Scott (3/19).
Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week: Alex Bialakis (The Citadel), Ryan Simpler (ETSU), Jack Maynard (UNCG), Cody Shelton (Samford), Taylor Purus (Western Carolina) and Brandon Barbery (VMI).
Pita was locked in at the plate last week, going 10-for-14 with eight RBIs and five runs scored as the Keydets went 4-1. Pita, who was named SoCon Player of the Week on March 5, leads the conference in slugging percentage (.723), total bases (107) and doubles (16).
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Ben Peden (The Citadel), Ben Anderson (Furman), Andrew Moritz (UNCG), Brandon Fryan (Samford), Spencer Holcombe (Western Carolina) and Cody Miller (Wofford).
Wofford (25-12, 6-3 SoCon) will travel to UNC Asheville on Wednesday before returning home for a series against The Citadel beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
