Sponsored by The Upcountry History Museum.

On April 25, 1846 Mexican Forces Defeated Zachary Taylor’s U.S. Troops along the Rio Grande in what became known as The Thornton Affair.

This would prove to be the primary justification President James Polk used to call congress to declare war, leading to the Mexican-American War.

Learn more about westward expansion in the upcoming exhibition “Imprinting the West: Manifest Destiny Real and Imagined” at the Upcountry History Museum this fall.
