OCONEE CO, SC (WSPA) – Thursday, a free orchid show will be at Duke Energy’s World of Energy education center at Oconee Nuclear Station February 21st through 23rd. The energy company has partnered with the Blue Ridge Orchid Society to host this event.
Over the three day exhibit nearly 60 types of orchid will be on display. Members from the Blue Ridge Orchid Society grow the tropical orchids and will talk to visitors about the plants.
This partnership, between the energy company and society, has lasted for over 10 years. Duke Energy Communication Consultant, Mikayla Kreuzberger, said nearly 500 of visitors came to last year’s show.
“This year, the orchid society is here and they are showing their plants. These are actually plants that the society volunteers grow themselves. So, you can come and look at these really rare species of orchids,” Kreuzberger said.
In addition to the free exhibit, society members will be on hand to teach visitors how to properly care for an orchid, and some orchids will be for sale.
Mark Reinke, an internationally known orchid hybridizer and grower, will be selling orchids from Marble Branch Farms in Walhalla, S.C.
The show is open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, and noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23. For more information about the World of Energy Center’s event, click here.
